Back by popular demand! Hunx and His Punx might be the first ever “girl group” fronted by a flamboyant gay male whose dream in life is to sound like a girl. They have created a unique new sound they refer to as “Young Oldies,” a mixture of 50s teenage rock ‘n’ roll, 60s girl groups and bubblegum pop. Hunx has a new solo album coming out on February 28th on Hardly Art. For this tour, the Punx will consist of Justin Champlin (aka Nobunny) on guitar, Shannon Shaw (Shannon & The Clams) on bass and Erin Emslie on drums.
With garage punks Heavy Cream from Nashville and local favourite White Lung.
On Saturday March 31, Vancouver’s Very Own presents an evening with Sepalcure and Machinedrum.
Sepalcure (Brooklyn)
Sepalcure’s combination of love for bass and 90s house acapellas is the culmination of a cathartic two week collaboration between Machinedrum and Praveen. Their mix of tribal dub, house and two step beats works equally well for both late nights in the club and rainy, introspective nights at home. Detroit techno chords cut through wooden beats, neon synths and dubbed out atmospherics. www.sepalcure.com
Machinedrum (Berlin)
Machinedrum has produced and composed several albums under various aliases since his first independent release in 1999. Covering an astonishing variety of styles with ease, he has always been a trailblazer – bridging the gap between genres that would otherwise never have met before. A true electronic music Renaissance man, Machinedrum blends together current pop music standards and trends with his own extensive knowledge of experimental production techniques, delivering his quality signature on every thing he touches. www.machinedrum.net
While Robot Koch performs in the Cabaret, join us in the Hideaway for three great Fade To Mind artists Kingdom, Total Freedom and Massacooramaan!
Kingdom
Los Angeles-based DJ / producer Kingdom rose to public acclaim with his debut single “Mind Reader” (released on Fool’s Gold in early 2010), a collaboration with big-voiced NYC diva Shyvonne. But even before “Mind Reader,” Kingdom had been deeply involved in Bok Bok & Lvis-1990′s London-based Night Slugs collective, having had his European debut at their second-ever club night. It was his mixtapes that first alerted Night Slugs’ attention. His debut 2006 mixtape fused grime, crunk, US club, and house with his unique adaptations of R&B vocals. On his debut Night Slugs EP That Mystic, Kingdom delivered five tracks that reference many of the aforementioned genres, but also posses a completely individual, otherworldly gleam. Kingdom now represents a leading force in a new generation of American bass producers. www.kkingdomm.com
Total Freedom
Los Angeles’ Total Freedom is a bit of an unsung hero, one of those figures who seems to have his hand in just about every cool event in the City of Angels. He puts his skills on display with a new mixtape for Opening Ceremony. Granted, it’s not a listen for the faint of heart, as he fearlessly traverses grime, R&B, new age, drum & bass, hardstyle, and tropical bass, not to mention a litany of indefinable points in between.
Massacooramaan
Massacooramaan aka Dave Quam is a writer, photographer, producer, and DJ whose work has appeared in XLR8R, The Wire, DJ Magazine, and Shook Mag to name a few. His blog, It’s After the End of the World, is one of the seminal portals into the kaleidoscopic regional/global bass sounds of yesterday and today. He’s recently relocated back to his hometown of Portland from Chicago, where he extensively documented and participated in the Windy City’s vibrant Juke/Footwork scene. He is also the newest member of LA-based label Fade to Mind, who will be releasing his debut EP this spring. www.davequam.wordpress.com
YOLO is a new monthly party in the Hideaway at the Waldorf Hotel curated by Cameron Reed AKA Babe Rainbow (Warp Records). Rap music and other danceables with rotating local guests and friends from out of town (Grimes, d’Eon, CFCF, Blood Diamonds, Teen Daze). On Friday March 16, Cameron will be joined by Prison Garde, the latest incarnation of electronic music monolith Vaughn Robert Squire. A man of many monikers and creative outlets, with a well celebrated history that spans multiple eras and genres of music (as Megasoid, Sixtoo, Villain Accelerate, and S&N to name a few).
