Thursday February 2, join us for a the closing party of George Vergette’s show in the Black and Yellow Gallery.
George Vergette – The Vancouver based artist explores text by scavenging at arms length; re-speaking sectioned phrase and intentionally removing context. He neatly splays adjunct solicitation, TelePrompted emotion, biased doctrine and social prattle side by each, confidently inviting the viewer’s recognition or deflection.
The Sweetest Asian Transexual is a group of text based work from disparate sources – sex ads, Facebook, novelty signs, Twitter, national newspapers and radio interviews – homogenized into a modern aesthetic using basic Helvetica. Most of them are screened right onto rag paper however one of them, titled ‘Death Can Stunt Your Growth’ is printed onto a discarded and degraded record jacket. Another work, titled ‘The Worst Thing That Ever Happened To Photography Was The Viewfinder’, is juxtaposed against a mass reproduction of a late 1800′s century glass negative. The glass negative – purchased on Ebay from an estate sale and printed in a run of 5000 on newsprint – plays the counter balance to an offhand remark about photography made during a radio interview. Other works including ‘The Sweetest Asian Transexual’, ‘Waiting On Chris To Make Me A Cheeseburger’, Hipsters Use Backdoor No Exceptions’, ‘Art Historical Reference’ and ‘I’d Rather Eat Shit Than Ride A Jap Bike’ are presented matter of fact without the knowledge of their previous context.
